New Initiative Funding

a) Dr. N. Philips received received funding for a new project investigating prosodic impairments in Alzheimer's disease and b) Running a study in the ERP lab at Rabinovitch

CRLMB New Initiative Funds were established to stimulate and facilitate research activities that will increase the breadth, quantity and quality of research in language, mind and brain.

Groups of at least two CRLMB members may apply for a New Initiatives Grant. Applicants must be principal, associate or collaborative members, or postdoctoral fellows. External parties will be permitted as third or fourth authors/applicants but all funding will be utilized in Quebec and administered by the principal applicant.

Effective this year, the New Initiatives applications will be evaluated with specific focus on the following: 1): the potential for the proposed study to develop novel techniques, methodologies or applications in speech and language research, or extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications; and 2) the potential for the proposal to yield data leading to a new grant application to an external funding agency, within a timeframe of one year from selection.

The proposal needs to explicitly address the rationale for the proposed study highlighting the major issue(s) that the data or approach will address.

Effective this year, applications may be considered for either a $10,000 award or a $20,000 award. The Centre will fund 4 $10,000 proposals, or 2 $10,000 and 1 $20,000 proposals. For the 20K proposal, an explicit justification budget is required. If the rationale is not sufficient to justify additional funds, to be utilized within the specified timeframe, the application will be considered for a $10,000 award.

Recipients of $10,000 New Initiative funds are requested (and required) to provide a matching contribution of $2500 specifically earmarked for technical support (for example RA’s) for the research project. Recipients of the $20,000 are requested (and required) to provide a matching contribution of $5000 earmarked for technical support. Matching monies need not be deposited into a project’s fund. Rather, they should be reported as part of the final report on each initiative, due to the centre within one year of award. For all awards, up to 20% of the request may be used for equipment.

Finally, a member may be on only a single application and ethics approval must be acquired within 4 months of the award notification or the award will be withdrawn and re-directed to a proposal that was not chosen for the initial award.
